This course takes you into the real-world practice of production sound. You will experience the key responsibilities of mixing, booming and assisting—from analysing a script and selecting equipment to planning microphone placement and recording dialogue on location. The course also prepares you for the physical, environmental and organisational realities of set work, including safety, changing weather conditions, equipment management, IFBs, expendables and professional sound department housekeeping.
You will learn how to plan and execute location sound recording, operate professional equipment and adapt microphone and mixing strategies as conditions change. You will develop the technical awareness, teamwork and practical judgement required to capture clean, intelligible dialogue in real production environments. You will also learn how to work safely, protect your physical well-being and maintain an organised, efficient sound workflow throughout a production.
The course combines online preparation with intensive in-person training in Dubrovnik. Online sessions introduce key principles of physical readiness, location safety, weather planning and equipment organisation before you apply them in practical exercises. In Dubrovnik, you will work in small sound crews, develop and implement a detailed miking plan and record a scripted dialogue scene with actors and a camera team. Through demonstrations, fieldwork and practical equipment tasks, you will rotate through the roles of production sound mixer, boom operator and sound assistant while receiving direct feedback from industry professionals.
